About
The Parent Network
Why
we got together
In
the past parents were rarely consulted on any services they needed. From
things as basic as parent and toddler groups to education and health issues.
From April 2000, parents were visited in different settings and asked
their opinions on the provision of service in their area. From the information
collected a booklet was published titled "Consulting Parents, Families
and Carers in Caerphilly County Borough'. The parents were enthusiastic
about forming a parent representation panel, which we then called the
Parent Network.
The
first meeting, in March 2001, was in a 'borrowed' office space with two
co-ordinators and seven parents. Now we are growing in number and strength
and we are based at The Right from the Start House in Aberbargoed.
Parents
involved are from varied backgrounds, some of which are as follows:
|
- A
parent who is registered blind and uses the Barnados Carer project.
- Grandparents
- Families
with children with special needs
- Fathers
either living with children or absent
- Foster
carers
- Single
parents
- Mothers
/ fathers in general
- Parents
representing different groups, eg. Homestart
|
 |
All
these parents want to make a difference in their communities. |
The
Parent Network today
We meet once a month and the parents run the meetings, eg chairperson,
secretary etc. At the meetings we discuss issues that are relevant to
parenting in Caerphilly, encouraging all parents to have their say and
to explore new issues which are introduced into the discussions.
Everybody
as a parent/carer can be involved in the Network, why not e-mail
us now?
Here
are some quotes from parents/carers about why they became involved
in the Network:
"It
is a good way to find out what is going on in the area".....Vanessa
Thomas.
"I
visited many Parent and Toddler groups and listened to so many
parents chatting about their problems (moaning) to other parents,
I wanted to make a difference and voice my concerns to people
who could help"....Nicola Morgan (single parent rep)
